CONVERTING GAS UNITS TO KILOWATT-HOURS (KWH)

Below is a step by step process for calculating gas kWh:

Calculation for imperial gas meters

Task                                                                                                        Sample

1) Number of units used                                                                                   100
2) Convert from imperial to metric – multiply number of units used by 2.83 (fixed)   283
3) Multiply by volume correction factor (1.022640)                                       289.407
4) Multiply by calorific value (39.3)                                                           11373.699
5) Divide by kWh conversion factor (3.6- Fixed)                                         3159.361
6) Multiply by read factor                                                                         3159.361

Note that the correction factor changes
Note that the calorific value changes
Read factor to be determined by supplier / meter details

Calculation for metric gas meters

Task                                                                                    Sample

1) Number of units used                                                                                 100
2) Multiply by volume correction factor (1.022640)                                         102.264
3) Multiply by calorific value (39.3)                                                             4018.975
4) Divide by kWh conversion factor (3.6 -Fixed)                                          1116.382

Note that the correction factor changes
Note that the calorific value changes
Read factor to be determined by supplier / meter details

What makes a good Monitoring and Targeting system?

dashboardscreenshotsmaller
Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) is a simple yet powerful, structured approach to identifying inefficient performance and eliminating waste. It is based around the principle that in order to manage something you must first be able to measure and quantify it.

The in depth guide from The Carbon Trust details key charting techniques and Automatic Meter Reading.
Carbon Management Consultants Envantage Ltd have developed abespoke Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) service that enables its customers to report on the following:
  • Consumption
  • Power Factor and Peak Demand
  • Target Setting
  • Budgets
  • Costings
  • Tariffs
  • Carbon Emissions
  • Exception Reporting

Energy tracking software

dashboardscreenshotsmaller

ENMAT (Energy Monitoring & Targeting) is a web based Energy Tracking system. It presents energy management data in a way that is relevant, meaningful and useful to users.

The purpose Energy Tracking is to relate your energy consumption data to the appropriate energy drivers, such as weather and production, so that you get a better understanding of how energy is being used. In particular, it will identify if there are signs of avoidable waste or other opportunities to reduce consumption.

Envantage offer a Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) service to enable organisations to save energy and cut costs. The use of this platform means that we can deliver a bespoke solutions to meet your needs.

Aimed at industrial/commercial SMEs and multi-site retailers, the Envantage ENMAT service utilises the latest software technologies  to obtain a full picture of customer energy usage across single or multiple sites.

Degree Days in Monitoring and Targeting

Degree days are a simplified form of historical weather data. They are commonly used in monitoring and targeting to model the relationship between energy consumption and outside air temperature. Weather normalization of energy consumption is one of the most common such uses of degree days.
Using degree days for energy management

Four valuable uses of degree days in energy management are:
  • Constructing control charts that compare benchmarked and actual energy usage (the closer they are, the greater your energy efficiency)
  • Evaluating success of savings measures
  • Detecting faults in heating systems and their control
  • Preparing annual budgets

Envantage Cuts Its Carbon Emissions By Switching To Cloud – March 25, 2013

images
UK Based Envantage Ltd is a Carbon Management Consultancy company with offices based in Manchester.  Envantage is able to help its customers to maximise benefits and reduce any threats from the Carbon Reduction Commitment.

Envantage have experienced consultants who have been highly trained in GHG quantification in accordance with the ISO 14064-1 standard, and have worked under the GHG Protocol and DEFRA guidelines for many years.

While Envantage previously relied on Microsoft Exchange Server and NAS systems to provide its IT capabilities, the company wanted to migrate its IT solutions to cloud to both reduce the time its IT staff needed to manage and monitor on-site infrastructure, as well as align with its focus on reducing carbon emissions.
Envantage chose Office 365—because online applications reduce the need for servers, and in turn electricity, thus supporting the company’s imperative for sustainability.

Reduced Carbon Footprint
A recent study, conducted by Microsoft together with Accenture and WSP Environment & Energy, found that energy use and carbon emissions can be reduced by more than 90 percent for small deployments.

Envantage have also invested in the Cisco EnergyWise Return on Investment with Cisco Unified IP Phones.

The benefits of Automatic meter reading (AMR) and Smart metering

smartmeter

Automatic meter reading, or AMR, is the technology of automatically collecting consumption, diagnostic, and status data from water meter or energy metering devices (gas, electric) and transferring that data to a central database for billing, troubleshooting, and analyzing.

Automatic meter reading ensures bills are based on actual, rather than estimated consumption, and avoids the need for manual readings, which can be impractical and unreliable.

AMR technologies include handheld, mobile and network technologies based on telephony platforms (wired and wireless), radio frequency (RF), or powerline transmission.

Advanced metering systems can provide benefits for utilities, retail providers and customers. Benefits will be recognized by the utilities with increased efficiencies, outage detection, tamper notification and reduced labor cost as a result of automating reads, connections and disconnects.

Key benefits include:
  • AMR minimises the need for onsite meter reading.
  • Removes the need to validate invoices.
  • Recording of half-hourly consumption
  • Save between 5% and 25 % on annual utility expenditure : (source http://www.carbontrust.co.uk)
  • Reduced carbon emissions
  • Highlight your company’s energy efficiency
  • Return on investment in energy savings
